Mythological Barbie: Design a Doll Based on Greek Mythology

Bring a little sparkle to your Greek Mythology unit with Mythological Barbie, where students design a Barbie doll based on a female character from Greek mythology. Using humor and creativity, students give their doll special features (like saying a catchphrase or performing an action), accessories, a vehicle, and an “also collect” item–maybe a friend, pet, or playset.

This is more than an art project. Every detail must relate to information students have learned about the character. A handy grading rubric makes sure all of the doll’s details tie back to the text.

This project can also spark a classroom discussion of gender roles in modern and ancient times. The instruction sheet starts with a brief overview of Barbie herself–how she evolved from cooking and shopping to pursuing high-powered careers, becoming an embodiment of her catchphrase:  “You can be anything!”

This download includes:

  • A printable template
  • Instructions
  • Scoring rubric
  • Student examples
